Knowledge of non linear optical techniques and of the practical laboratory applications especially as the production, detection and apllication of ultrafast laser pulses is concerned.

Course program
Principles of non linear optics. Temporal and spatial coherence. Phase matching, armoni generation, parametric generation. Gaussian beams. Pulsed lasers and production of short pulses: Q-switching, mode locking, Kerr lens, compression of laser pulses. Characterization of ultrashort laser pulses, optical correlation. Pump-probe techniques. Optical Kerr effect, transient infrared absorption both 1D and 2D, energy transfer processes: Forster and Dexter mechanisms.
